Ten Ways To Jump Start Your New Year Resolutions!
Time passes so fast ! Just a few weeks ago, we were coming out of our holiday meals, drinks, spending, and hangovers. We were also throwing our New Year’s resolutions. Here we are, already in the second month of the new year. My biggest daily problem – and probably yours too – is finding enough time to do everything. It seems that society and our daily lives are speeding up, but things never slow down, hence the battle to “do it all”. If you made a resolution on January 1st and you’re having a little trouble, or maybe you’re putting it off to another day, month, or season, no worries. You can make and keep a resolution virtually any day of the year.
Just as important, keep in mind that you don’t have to make your resolution happen overnight. You have the power of time: there are 11 months left in the year. One small step, one day at a time for a year can reap huge rewards! Consider these tips when considering your next move:
- Get organized. If you’re buried in paper and clutter, it’s hard to motivate yourself to achieve a dream, resolution, and daily goals. I like to do a deep clean three or four times a year, and definitely do a big clean around New Years. In addition to helping you find things, maintain clarity, and stay focused on your goals daily routines, a perfectly clean and organized home/office makes you feel good. If your organizing project takes longer than a day or a weekend, break it up into smaller projects that you can tackle over a few weeks, a month, or maybe a quarter – whichever works best for you. .
- keep it simple. Focus on one major life-changing dream at a time. Turn your dream into a specific one-sentence resolution. Make that resolution a reality with small daily steps/goals. Take one small step at a time, one day at a time for a year. Don’t create an unrealistic long list of things you think you “have to do”, but know that you “won’t do”. It’s a recipe for failure and broken promises. Tackle a single dream that you have a lot of passion, desire, and interest in.
- Learn and plan: Do your homework to learn the “who, what, when, where, why and how” that will allow you to build a plan that will take you from idea to realization: realizing your dream, your resolution. Construct an outline. Break down big, long-term goals into small, daily steps that can be taken one at a time. Keep learning as you go. Research and learning never stop. There is always something new to learn.
- Set priorities: You can’t do it all in one day, that’s unrealistic. Know the next 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 daily goals needed, prioritize and tackle them one by one. Use your daily goals as building blocks. One success over another will generate enthusiasm, confidence, self-esteem, motivation and momentum. Your daily goals are like stairs to the stars. Keep climbing. Keep reaching. Each stage will bring you closer to catching a handful of stardust.
- Write it: A daily resolution journal will help you develop a plan, track progress, create a schedule, measure milestones, and reward yourself for hard-earned victories. Your journal will also keep you organized and make daily and weekly check-ins a snap.
- Do this every day: Make every day New Year’s Day. Make every day count. Take action, one step at a time, one day at a time for a year. This approach removes the unrealistic pressure to move mountains overnight. Be patient. The rewards will add up exponentially over time, like money in the bank attracting interest.
- Tell the world: Enlist your friends and family in your quest. Ask for their advice and support. Ask them to join you in daily activities! Create a blog and record your journey, or join a blogging community filled with like-minded people. Join a club. Take a class. Plant post-its at work and at home as reminders. Wear your resolution on your T-shirt. Carry your resolution on your cup of coffee. Put it on your computer screen and your mouse pad. Focus on your goals every day. Most importantly, keep an eye on the end result – what you stand to gain when you achieve your dream, resolution, and daily goals!
- Being flexible: Obstacles will appear like dandelions on a spring day and will eventually interfere with the best-laid plans. You will often be overtaken by events (OBE). Plan the obstacles and embrace them. Use them to gain knowledge, experience, strength and determination. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, use obstacles to build self-esteem, momentum, and motivation by overcoming and defeating them. Don’t dwell on them. Instead, manipulate them and take the next step!
- Celebrate your successes: Give yourself a pat on the back! Be proud of your accomplishments and your big and small victories. Use them to fuel the fire of passion for your dream. Reward yourself often. The little pleasures of a job well done will keep you interested, enthusiastic and moving forward day after day.
- Keep an eye on the price: Know your ultimate goal. Know what you want to achieve. Visualize what your dream, your resolution will look like at the end of the journey. Stay focused on the “brass ring” and when you “finally catch it, hold on tight and level up”!
Remember: I decide to achieve my New Year’s resolutions, one resolution, one day at a time for a year. It’s up to you. Do it today. Turn your resolution into reality in five simple, common-sense steps: Dare to Dream, Decide, Define, Make a Plan, and Do It Daily. Make your resolution a permanent resolution for life, something that stays with you for good! Above all, be a Resolutionista, someone who makes resolutions, sticks to their resolutions and loves the trip! Make every day New Year’s Day. Make every day count. Let’s go for that!
