Law Enforcement Officers Can Be Helped By Chiropractic Care

Law enforcement officers are a particularly well-placed profession in many respects. We all know that they are exposed to many risk factors. But few of us know that police officers tend to have an increased risk of lower back pain. This article will discuss the prevalence, cause, and management of first responder lower back pain.

A recent study in the February 2017 edition of the research journal Spine examined lower back pain among members of the police profession. Questionnaires completed by 3,589 law enforcement officers revealed that nearly 70% of them reported symptoms of lower back pain in the past 12 months. Nearly 97% of them believed that the presence of their low back pain was partially or totally related to their work in the police. Nearly 30% of respondents lived with chronic low back pain. These officers were more likely to report a reduction in work activities and days lost from work over the past year due to their pain.

The causes of low back pain in the police community stem from a variety of factors.

Many law enforcement personnel have to spend long hours driving vehicles. As these vehicles are used for long periods of time by different drivers, the driver’s seats begin to deteriorate. Padding may become unevenly compacted. If so, the driver will be sitting in an awkward, unbalanced position for many hours. When this happens, it puts physical pressure on the lower back and pelvic joints.

Another cause of back problems is due to the physical nature of the job. Law enforcement officials are required to physically chase suspects, climb and dodge obstacles, and restrain offenders. Sometimes a police officer is the first person to arrive at a medical emergency and may need to be in a demanding postural position to administer CPR, resuscitation, stop blood loss, or move a victim away from danger. Inevitably, again, physical stress occurs in the back.

A sometimes overlooked cause of back pain is officers’ seat belts. A duty belt is worn around the upper hips and contains not only a gun, but many other items such as handcuffs, truncheon, radio, TASER, and pouch for latex gloves. Seat belts can be heavy, difficult to wear and put mechanical stress on the lower back.

There are certainly other causes of stress on the lower back, but we get an overall idea with the examples cited.

Whatever the cause of the injury and complaint, a physical solution and care from a chiropractor can usually help resolve a physical problem. Chiropractors focus on helping patients who suffer from lower back pain. Many back conditions are caused by misalignments and improper movements of the bones of the spine and pelvis. Chiropractors can evaluate the cop during a physical exam and determine if realignment by the chiropractor performing a chiropractic adjustment will help correct the cause of the back pain.

Chiropractors are experts in treating lower back injuries. Many law enforcement officers who have developed back pain due to their profession have been helped by chiropractors. Additionally, many police officers regularly visit chiropractors for maintenance care to avoid injury and enjoy a long healthy career.
