No, I’m not criticizing your personal hygiene, I mean your car.

It’s easy, it will take a few hours, add hundreds to the value of your car and best of all sell it to the first caller, giving you time to get on with your life.

I have been in the auto business for a long time. I have trained eyes that I can see through dirt to spot a good car in front of something that has just been scaled up.

So why after all these years am I still attracted to shiny things? There are evolutionary reasons why we as humans judge books by their covers and are overwhelmingly influenced by first impressions. This is a discussion for another type of website, but it is a basic fact. Now I won’t be fooled by a shiny thing, if I examine a car closely and get this overpowering aroma of fresh paint and see that the dashboard has had a nice coat of some substance similar to Brylcream, I will realize soon. But the facts are I arrived at an auction/sale yard and walked past five good but dirty cars and walked towards the shiny thing.

Situation B: Your car is worth a few pounds, maybe less than 6 years old. Then get a trash bag and get your clutter out of the car and reserve it for a professional valet. A full valet will cost you between £50 and £75 depending on where you are. Mobile valets work hard for their money, but if you can, you better drop off your car somewhere with locals. They generally get better results.

If your car really is a filthy beast covered in tar etc, just get it Valeted because it’s not worth investing in all the pre-cleaning stuff etc, you’ll have to polish a turd. If your car is normal, Autoglyms Super Resin Polish will have it looking like new. Do one side at a time (apply and remove wax) and give it a strong wrist/nail action on scratches/pollen or tar. It has cutting properties and will remove a lot of visible marks. When removing polish, always use two cloths, a first polish to remove 90% of the residue and a final polish to give the car one last pass. I do this last thing and find these microfiber cloths you can buy at ideal bookstores.

Vacuum the interior and wipe all edges of the door with a damp cloth, remember that one of the most impressive moments is when a potential buyer opens the driver’s door. If it’s covered in dirty grease and old mud stains, it’s no good. A good wipe down of the dash/plastics and door cards with a damp cloth will always bring a big improvement. If plastics are dirty, baby wipes are a great tool. Go over a scruffy car two or three times with baby wipes and it will remove some stains you thought would never go away.

Once an interior is clean, that’s enough. A quick spray of neutradol is good or any other household product you have (usually best to spray under seats). A bad mistake is to use a cheap silicone wipe that makes your dashboard and steering wheel all greasy. Just clean is fine. It won’t add much value, but if you want me to recommend a product, then again, Autoglyms vinyl and rubber care will give your interior a nice non-greasy shine and smell great too.

Washing and waxing your wheels should suffice. If they are alloy and heavily pitted with brake dust, you can use an alloy wheel cleaner. You want to spray the wheel then attack with your old toothbrush, then hose down in a minute. So one wheel at a time, and as I say, only use on really dirty rims.

Cleaning Windows makes a big difference, make sure you clean it inside and out. Do not use household products, again Autoglym has products and FastGlass is the easiest to use. If you have nothing else, use a damp chamois (leather). You can lightly wax the outside of your windows but never your windshield. Do that and you’ll go blind the second it rains.

Do not use tire paint if such a thing still exists? Most tire shines are good, again Autoglym Instant Tire Dressing gives tires a shiny new look with just a spray.

If you ever consider buying a pad to polish your cars professionally, don’t. A cheap one under £50 won’t have power and will be more hassle than it’s worth. A professional pad will burn off your baby’s paint in less than 5 seconds and coat all of your edges with white waxy residue. Strictly professional use.

If you have scratches on your car that look like they were applied with a screwdriver, there’s not much you can do about it. But you’d be surprised how many scuffs and light scratches will disappear. The super resin polish will take out the lighter ones, for something heavier I have professional abrasives from 3M and Farecla. You can rummage under the kitchen sink and look for something with mild abrasive qualities (not a Brillo pad!). I used brass and found a wood polish that does the job. If you get stuck, even toothpaste can remove the bad look of a scratch (and leave your car feeling fresh and minty!!)

Thinking about taking care of some touch-ups? Be very careful, make sure you touch the actual stone scratches and chips. I’ve seen cars with touches of Birdlime and tar. Be very selective in touching, if your car has three or four bad stone chips, on the leading edge of your hood which are an eyesore, then touching is good. If your car is full of rocks, don’t even start it. A car that has had the dot printer treatment looks bad and it will take you all day.
